16:16 is both a record and an address. The house at 1616 JPA in Charlottesville was a shared hideout for outcasts, artists, and scholars — and the place where area C and jh0st finally got their noise on tape. The number had been trailing us anyway: the drum machine was an HR-16, the year was 1991 upside down, and the release date landed on 6/16. Some intersections are inevitable.

Erik Carlson, aka area C, came from the emotional charge of U2 and alt-pop; jh0st from the avant-garde noise of Sonic Youth and Wept. Like a camera obscura, the collaboration inverted both trajectories. area C moved toward the more avant-garde while jh0st flew dangerously close to the boundaries of pop — Icarus-wings over New Wave. 16:16 is the bookmark where those trajectories crossed. Small amps, curated effects pedals, and occasional performances for a ghosted audience at abandoned downtown intersections. An imaginary address at the glorious corner of pop and avant-garde.
