Released in 1986 on Carrier Communications — an all-cassette, all-homegrown label — Animus was Jh0st’s first record and an early test of the creative limits of 4-track recording. Minimalist compositions for piano and alto saxophone, charged with the particular energy that comes from naïveté meeting newfound technique. Drawing from ECM artists like Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, these spare recordings mark a starting point: compositional structure and open-ended improvisation in the same breath.
