Interdependent Urbanism

Interdependent Urbanism is an architectural and urban research project exploring computation as a tool for the increasingly complex design of cities — voxels, machine learning, customization, all running simultaneously.

Five hours to write, record, and narrate the soundtrack. The electric piano backdrop came quickly — until the cat jumped onto the keyboard mid-take, creating a semi-dissonant kerplunk that turned into the energized rhythmic theme you hear throughout. Sometimes the best takes aren’t planned. The piano comping later found its way into mussi.

The voiceover was a different story. Great voiceover artists are highly trained professionals for good reason — narration requires pace, inflection, pronunciation, and presence all at once, with no musical melody to hide behind. It’s an ambidextrous art. Don’t listen too closely. Just watch.

The research has been internationally published, including in Thomas Schroepfer’s Ecological Urban Architecture. For more where machine learning, architecture, and sound intersect, the Cloud interactive sculpture covers similar ground.
